AceShowbiz - The international film critics association FIPRESCI has awarded Fiume o morte! the inaugural Documentary Grand Prix for 2025. The announcement was made during the opening night of the Millennium Docs Against Gravity (MDAG) festival in Warsaw, Poland.
This new award, created to recognize outstanding documentary films, will be presented annually at MDAG. According to official statements, the jury was composed of FIPRESCI members representing over 50 national sections along with individual members from more than 30 additional countries, ensuring a broad and diverse critical perspective.
Igor Bezinovi?, the filmmaker behind Fiume o morte!, directs the documentary which explores a unique historical episode involving a paramilitary group led by Italian nationalist and poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. This group seized control of the city of Fiume—today known as Rijeka, Croatia—claiming it for Italy in a striking moment of post-World War I history.
Fiume o morte! stood out among notable competitors, surpassing other acclaimed documentaries such as Oscar winner Mr. Nobody Against Putin and Oscar nominee The Perfect Neighbor. The film’s recognition highlights its significance in documenting a complex and dramatic historical event through a compelling narrative lens.
The FIPRESCI Documentary Grand Prix promises to become a prestigious accolade in the documentary film community, spotlighting remarkable works each year at Millennium Docs Against Gravity.
