AceShowbiz - Chris Evans is returning as Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Avengers: Doomsday, marking his first appearance as the character since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. This comeback follows a compelling new story concept presented by director Joe Russo, which convinced Evans to step back into the iconic role after nearly eight years.
Since Endgame, Steve Rogers has been depicted as trying to live the quiet life he always wanted, having retired from his superhero duties. Over the years, Marvel offered Evans various ideas for continuing Steve Rogers’ journey, including a version where he would act as Nomad. Evans declined those options to preserve the emotional conclusion of the character’s arc. The decision to return was influenced in part by Robert Downey Jr.’s own return to the MCU, which helped sway Evans toward accepting the new role.
Chris Evans first donned the Captain America mantle in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and went on to star in key MCU entries such as The Winter Soldier, Civil War, The Avengers, Age of Ultron, Infinity War, and Endgame. Between 2019 and now, Evans largely stepped away from the MCU, with only a brief cameo as a variant of Johnny Storm/Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, will bring together heroes from multiple universes, including Evans as Steve Rogers and Anthony Mackie as the current Captain America of Earth-616. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, promising a fresh chapter for Steve Rogers that respects his past while expanding his legacy.
