Meryl Streep slams 'boring' superhero movies, saying they oversimplify characters. She promotes The Devil Wears Prada 2 with Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt.

AceShowbiz - Meryl Streep recently expressed her dissatisfaction with the current trend in superhero movies, saying that the genre has led to films becoming less interesting due to their simplistic portrayal of characters. She made these remarks while promoting her new film, The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is set to open this weekend.
During an interview on the Hits Radio Breakfast Show alongside her co-stars Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, the conversation turned to the character of Miranda Priestly and whether audiences would get to see a softer side of her in the sequel. When asked about this, Streep commented on the nature of modern films, saying, “I feel like you get a realistic view. I think we tend to Marvel-ize the movies now. We got the villains and we got the good guys, and it’s so boring.”
She elaborated by explaining that real-life characters are rarely all good or all bad. Streep said, “What’s really interesting about life is that some of the heroes are flawed and some of the villains are human and interesting and have their own strengths. So that’s what I like about this [movie]. It’s messier.”
The interview also touched on the topic of artificial intelligence and whether Miranda Priestly would use it. Streep responded that her character would likely rely on assistants for such tasks rather than using AI herself. This led Hathaway to share a recent experience about hiring for a job, where every candidate sent back identical thank-you notes — apparently all generated by ChatGPT.
Hathaway recalled, “The first one arrived and I’m like, ‘That’s so nice and so professional.’ And then the second one arrived and I’m like, ‘Oh no.’ So I just want to warn you: If you think you’re getting away with something, you might be revealing yourself. It was hilarious.”
Streep reacted strongly to this, expressing disapproval. She said, “There are so many Anne Hathaways that you’re going to apply to that you can’t write it yourself? That would be an absolute killer — nobody on that list gets that job. That’s just tragic, in my opinion. Don’t let the human get away girls. The future is female, so you better hold on.”
Separately, Streep revealed she managed to double her salary for a Disney sequel by initially declining their offer. During a cast interview on the show Today, she shared the story of how she was contacted to reprise an iconic role but said no at first. She explained, “They called me up and they made an offer, and I said, ‘No, not going to do it.’ I knew it was going to be a hit, and I wanted to see if I doubled my ask… And they went right away and said, ‘Sure.’ I thought, I’m 50-60 [years old] — it took me this long to understand that I could do that! They needed me, I felt. I was ready to retire. That was a lesson.”
The remarks from Streep provide insight into her views on the complexity of characters in films today, and her candidness about industry negotiations highlights her savvy approach to her career. Meanwhile, fans of The Devil Wears Prada 2 can anticipate seeing a more nuanced and layered portrayal of Miranda Priestly when the movie hits theaters this weekend.
