AceShowbiz - Excitement is building for the upcoming sci-fi thriller Hope, starring Michael Fassbender, as the first set of action-packed images from the film have been released. The movie is set to premiere in competition at the prestigious 2026 Cannes Film Festival, scheduled from May 12 to 23, 2026. Ahead of its debut, Neon, the North American distributor of Hope, shared several intriguing stills from the film on Instagram, offering fans a glimpse into the gripping narrative.
The initial images highlight the character Sung-ae, portrayed by Jung Ho-yeon, who appears visibly tense while driving a police car. Additional photos showcase a variety of intense moments, including a man interacting with a phone attached to a utility pole, a police officer brandishing his firearm during a critical scene, and Sung-ae herself aiming her weapon at an unidentified assailant. These visuals hint at the suspenseful and mysterious atmosphere that Hope aims to deliver.
While Fassbender is one of the lead actors, Neon has yet to release any images of his character. The film also stars his wife, Alicia Vikander, alongside a diverse cast including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Uhm Tae-goo, and Lee Kyu-hyung. The acclaimed filmmaker Na Hong-jin, known for multiple accolades over the last two decades, wrote and directed Hope and co-produced it with Saemi Kim.
The story unfolds near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Hope Harbor, South Korea, where locals grow anxious after reports surface of a tiger roaming the area. What initially appears to be a straightforward problem for the local police chief soon escalates into a complex and shocking mystery that threatens to disrupt the entire village. This blend of science fiction and thriller elements sets the stage for a compelling cinematic experience.
At Cannes, Hope will compete in the main competition category for the coveted Palme d'Or, aiming to follow in the footsteps of 2025’s winner, It Was Just an Accident. The film faces competition from approximately two dozen other entries, including titles such as All of a Sudden, The Beloved, Fatherland, Fjord, Minotaur, Paper Tiger, Sheep in the Box, and The Unknown.
Michael Fassbender recently appeared in the thriller Black Bag, starring alongside Cate Blanchett. He is widely recognized for his portrayal of Magneto in the X-Men franchise, including X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Beyond superhero films, Fassbender has delivered notable performances in movies like Inglourious Basterds, Prometheus, 12 Years a Slave, Steve Jobs, Alien: Covenant, Band of Brothers, and The Agency: Central Intelligence.
His work in 12 Years a Slave and Steve Jobs earned him nominations from both the Oscars and the Golden Globes, while his ensemble cast with Inglourious Basterds won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture in 2010. Now, with the premiere of Hope just days away, anticipation is high for Fassbender’s latest venture into intense, thought-provoking cinema.
Following its debut at Cannes, Hope is expected to receive a theatrical release, although the exact date has not yet been announced. Fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see how this new thriller from Na Hong-jin and starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander will fare on the international stage and beyond.
