AceShowbiz - Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Boys season 5, episode 3. The hit Prime Video series continues to delve into dark, twisted territory as two of its most conflicted characters, Billy Butcher and Ryan Butcher, confront their fractured relationship. Based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys has surpassed many Marvel shows in viewership, solidifying its place as a streaming powerhouse. Now, the latest episode brings a pivotal moment where Butcher (played by Karl Urban) and Ryan Butcher (played by Cameron Crovetti) finally face each other and the painful truths their past holds.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, series creator and showrunner Eric Kripke discussed the emotionally charged ending of episode 3. The reunion between Butcher and Ryan is raw and revealing, exposing their individual struggles and the dangerous mission Butcher has in mind. Butcher’s goal is to lure Homelander—Ryan’s biological father and the show’s main antagonist—into the open by using Ryan as bait. The plan involves a supe virus designed to kill Homelander, but it carries the deadly risk of killing Ryan as well.
During their encounter, Butcher is brutally honest with Ryan, even pushing him toward a confrontation with Homelander. Kripke explained how this dynamic reflects the complexity of Butcher’s character. “That conversation he has with Ryan at the bar is chilling because it’s delivered with such warmth and sympathy, but he’s asking the kid to be a suicide bomber,” Kripke said. This version of Butcher doesn’t sugarcoat his intentions or manipulate those around him. He simply lays out the harsh reality that Ryan may have to sacrifice himself.
Kripke emphasized how Butcher’s approach is cold yet sincere. While he shows some regret for what Ryan endures, that remorse is just a small flicker amid his ruthless determination. “If he has the virus and needs Ryan to do it again, he would do it without hesitation. He’d feel bad, but I don’t think that would stop any of his actions,” the showrunner added, underscoring the moral ambiguity defining Butcher this season.
Earlier episodes revealed Ryan hiding in Russia before returning to visit Zoe, but episode 3 marks the moment Butcher tracks him down to unveil his plan. Despite initially stating that Ryan isn’t strong enough to face Homelander, Ryan defies this by confronting his father. The encounter is brutal and dark, with Homelander unleashing a violent assault that leaves Ryan apparently lifeless. However, as Butcher arrives, Ryan shows faint signs of life.
Though Butcher is known for his hardened demeanor, he displays genuine care for Ryan in these final moments, highlighting the complicated emotional bond between them. The aftermath of Homelander’s attack raises questions about Ryan’s fate and the lengths Butcher will go to eliminate Homelander, even at great personal cost.
The Boys continues to explore themes of family, loyalty, and sacrifice against a backdrop of intense action and moral complexity. The evolving relationship between Butcher and Ryan adds a deeply personal dimension to the ongoing conflict with Homelander, setting the stage for dramatic developments in the episodes to come.
The Boys season 5 is available for streaming on Prime Video.
