AceShowbiz - The Devil Wears Prada star Meryl Streep portrayed the icy publishing executive Miranda Priestly with a famously cold demeanor in the 2006 original film. Known for her Method acting approach, Streep kept a distance from her co-stars, often avoiding social gatherings on set. However, according to co-star Emily Blunt, she relaxed considerably during the sequel’s production and even joined cast members for martini happy hours.
Blunt revealed in a recent interview that Streep seemed to have “got bored” of maintaining her distant persona for the sequel, sometimes sharing drinks with her, Anne Hathaway, and Stanley Tucci. “Meryl is naturally just someone you want to have a beverage with,” Blunt said, highlighting the actress’s fun side that contrasted her icy character.
Tucci chimed in, describing Streep as “the most fun ever,” a sentiment Blunt eagerly echoed. The trio’s camaraderie was brought up during a conversation with Fandango promoting the upcoming sequel, where Tucci was asked about hosting martini parties after long days of shooting.
“It did happen sometimes,” admitted Tucci, while Blunt enthusiastically endorsed the tradition. “You’ve never seen a makeup trailer so happy to have Stanley Tucci on it because you will get a martini at some point,” she joked, adding that the makeup trailer was actually her favorite place on set.
Tucci described a good film set as one where actors dress up, apply makeup, chat with colleagues, and enjoy a drink together — joking that he doesn’t even need the film part for it to be enjoyable. When asked if Streep participated in these social hours during the sequel, Tucci teased that she joined “sometimes.”
Blunt elaborated, saying, “She was more Method-y on the first one. And then I think she kind of got bored with that on this one. I think she knew us too well.” This assessment aligns with Streep’s own reflections in a 2021 Entertainment Weekly oral history marking the 15th anniversary of the original film.
In that interview, Streep called her initial attempt at Method acting “horrible,” admitting she felt miserable isolating herself in her trailer while the cast enjoyed themselves. “I was so depressed! I said, ‘Well, it’s the price you pay for being boss!’ That’s the last time I ever attempted a Method thing!” she said.
It seems Streep stayed true to this promise during the filming of The Devil Wears Prada 2, embracing a more sociable atmosphere thanks in part to Tucci and his martini shaker. The relaxed vibe on set allowed the cast to bond beyond their on-screen roles, creating a fun and memorable experience for everyone involved.
Fans looking forward to the sequel can expect not only a sharp continuation of the story but also a cast that enjoyed their time together behind the scenes, contrasting the chilly on-screen persona that made the original so iconic.
