Peacock cancels Clueless sequel starring Alicia Silverstone, while Hollywood doubles down on reboots like Commando, Conan, and Miami Vice.

AceShowbiz - Hollywood continues its love affair with nostalgic reboots and sequels, as seen in recent announcements like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new Commando and Conan sequels, James Mangold’s Cop Land TV adaptation, and the upcoming Miami Vice reboot starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. However, despite this trend, Peacock has canceled the planned sequel to the cult comedy classic Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone.
Reported by Variety, Peacock’s sequel series to Clueless was officially shelved nearly a year after the project was first announced. The show was intended to follow Silverstone’s iconic character Cher Horowitz as she navigated her late 40s, a significant time jump from the original 1995 film where Cher was a 16-year-old high schooler. The planned series promised to revisit the beloved character’s evolution but, unfortunately, will no longer move forward on Peacock.
Despite this setback, there remains optimism among fans and industry insiders. Variety’s sources reveal that CBS Studios and Paramount still hold strong faith in the project and its intellectual property. They expect that the sequel will attract substantial interest when it is presented again to potential buyers, suggesting that the project could find a new home and resume development in the future.
Alicia Silverstone reprised her role as Cher Horowitz in a nostalgic 2023 Super Bowl commercial for Rakuten, alongside Elisa Donovan, who played Cher’s frenemy Amber Mariens in the original film. In the commercial, Cher has matured beyond her former clueless persona but remains true to the character’s essence. However, no official word has been given about the involvement of other original cast members such as Paul Rudd, Donald Faison, Stacey Dash, Breckin Meyer, or Justin Walker. Sadly, Brittany Murphy, who portrayed Tai Frasier, passed away in 2009 and cannot return.
For those craving more Clueless content beyond the original movie, the 1996 ABC sitcom continuation offered three seasons featuring much of the main cast—although Cher was played by Rachel Blanchard instead of Silverstone. This series even included a crossover with Melissa Joan Hart’s Sabrina the Teenage Witch. While the show is not officially streaming anywhere, the first season has been uploaded to YouTube for fans to revisit.
The cancellation at Peacock is a disappointment for many who were eager to see a grown-up Cher Horowitz on screen again, but industry insiders’ confidence in the project means this is unlikely the end of the road. The cult status of Clueless and the enduring popularity of its characters keep the door open for future opportunities to revive or reimagine the story for a new generation.
As Hollywood continues to mine its past for profitable franchises, the fate of the Clueless sequel remains uncertain but hopeful. Fans and observers alike will be watching closely to see if CBS Studios and Paramount can successfully find a new platform to bring Cher Horowitz back to life, potentially reigniting the beloved franchise and introducing it to a wider audience.
