AceShowbiz - In 2025, Peacock announced development of a new Clueless TV series featuring Alicia Silverstone reprising her iconic role as Cher Horowitz from the 1995 cult classic film. Silverstone was also set to executive produce the reboot, sparking excitement among fans eager for a fresh take on the beloved story.
The original Clueless movie, which was loosely based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma, focused on Cher, the popular high school queen bee at Bronson Alcott High. Cher’s efforts to play matchmaker for her friends and teachers formed the heart of the film’s storyline. The movie’s success led to a previous TV adaptation in 1996, which featured original cast members Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, and Elisa Donovan reprising their roles. However, Silverstone and Paul Rudd, who played Cher’s love interest Josh, did not return. The role of Cher was recast with Rachel Blanchard, and the show aired on ABC for three seasons before its cancellation.
Peacock had also attempted another reboot in 2019 centered on Dash’s character Dionne, but that project never moved forward. The 2025 revival, with Silverstone returning as Cher, was highly anticipated as she had recently reprised the character for a Super Bowl commercial in 2023, reigniting interest in the franchise.
During an interview with Today in August 2025, Silverstone expressed enthusiasm about reprising Cher but emphasized the importance of honoring the original film’s spirit. She said the goal of the new series was to respect what fans love about Clueless and Cher, while also introducing fresh elements to the story. At the time, the project was still in early development stages, leaving many details yet to be finalized.
Unfortunately, in April 2026, reports emerged that Peacock had canceled the upcoming Clueless TV series. According to TMZ, the streaming service decided not to move forward with the show’s development. However, the series was reportedly still being shopped around by CBS Studios to find another potential platform, leaving open the possibility that the project might resurface elsewhere.
The planned reboot was to be written by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creators behind Gossip Girl, along with Jordan Weiss from Dollface. Additionally, Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original 1995 film, and producer Robert Lawrence were attached as executive producers, lending strong creative continuity to the project.
Fans hoping to watch the series will find no platform yet, as Peacock was the intended home before cancellation. As of now, no alternative streaming service or network has been confirmed to pick up the show.
Despite the setback, original cast members have expressed interest in revisiting their roles. In particular, Stacey Dash, who portrayed Dionne, told Us Weekly in March 2026 that she would “absolutely” be open to a Clueless sequel, provided that Amy Heckerling remained involved creatively. This enthusiasm from the original cast underscores the lasting impact and devoted fan base of the franchise.
The legacy of Clueless remains strong decades after its theatrical release, with fans eager for any new content that captures the charm and wit of the 1995 film. Though the Peacock reboot starring Alicia Silverstone as Cher will not proceed on that platform, the story’s future in television may still hold potential depending on where CBS Studios can place the project.
For now, audiences can continue to enjoy the original film and the 1996 TV series, as well as the recent Super Bowl commercial featuring Silverstone reprising her role, keeping the spirit of Cher Horowitz alive in popular culture.
