The singer appeared onstage during the festival’s opening weekend and briefly reacted to a loud noise coming from the crowd. At the time, Carpenter seemed puzzled and referred to the sound as "weird" while addressing the audience.
Videos of the exchange quickly circulated on social media, where some viewers identified the sound as a traditional Arabic ululation called a zaghrouta.
This led to criticism from several users who described Carpenter's reaction as "insensitive" and "Islamophobic."
In response, Carpenter issued a statement on X, clarifying her position and apologizing for the misunderstanding.
She wrote, "My apologies i didn't see this person with my eyes and couldn't hear clearly, my reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. could have handled it better!"
The "Espresso" singer also shared that she has since educated herself about the sound that caused the confusion.
"now i know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out," Carpenter added.
