AceShowbiz - The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has revealed its highly anticipated class of 2026 inductees, spotlighting an eclectic mix of influential artists across genres. The Performer category will welcome Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan into its prestigious ranks.
Alongside the performers, the Hall will honor several trailblazers with special awards. Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons are set to receive the Early Influence Award, recognizing their foundational impact on music. Songwriter Linda Creed and producers Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin will be celebrated with the Musical Excellence Award for their outstanding contributions behind the scenes. Television personality Ed Sullivan will be granted the Ahmet Ertegun Award, a tribute to his role in promoting rock and roll.
John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, emphasized the significance of the honor: "Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is music's highest honor." He added that the upcoming ceremony promises to be memorable, celebrating the achievements of these legendary artists. The event is slated for November 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on ABC and Disney+ the following month.
Despite the excitement, some notable artists did not make the cut this year. New Edition won the fan vote but fell short of induction. Popular acts such as Pink and Shakira, who placed third and fourth respectively in fan voting, were also absent from the final list.
Phil Collins returns to the Hall as a solo inductee for the first time, having previously been inducted in 2010 with Genesis. After concluding the Genesis Last Domino? farewell tour in 2022, he maintained a low profile but recently appeared in a BBC interview confirming he is now “totally mobile and healthy” following a tough period of health challenges.
Meanwhile, Billy Idol expressed his elation upon hearing the news. He told Rolling Stone, "We've been building towards this, and it's a perfect payoff." Idol described the induction as a dream come true and a meaningful acknowledgment from his peers, highlighting how such recognition reveals how one is truly regarded in the industry.
Iron Maiden will finally enter the Hall after three previous nominations. Their manager, Rod Smallwood, issued a statement thanking the organization and recognizing the contributions of all former band members as part of the group's history. He emphasized the band’s strong connection with their fans over awards but acknowledged the honor of being recognized by the industry.
However, the band’s frontman Bruce Dickinson has historically been critical of the Rock Hall. In 2018, he called it an “utter and complete load of bollocks,” criticizing its American leadership and dismissing the institution’s credibility. He suggested that those behind the Hall should “stop taking Prozac and start drinking beer.”
Oasis have voiced similar skepticism. In a 2024 interview with The Sunday Times, Liam Gallagher openly criticized the Hall, stating, "Do me a favor and fuck off." He compared induction to being placed in a rap hall of fame, an association he rejects, and claimed he has contributed more to rock & roll than many on the Hall’s board. His remarks reflect a long-standing ambivalence some artists feel toward the institution.
Interestingly, many artists who initially disparage the Hall change their tune upon induction. For example, Cher famously dismissed the Hall in 2023 but attended and opened the ceremony the following year, demonstrating a shift in attitude after receiving the honor.
Questions remain about which inductees will attend the upcoming ceremony. Phil Collins, Oasis, and Iron Maiden have yet to confirm their participation. Similarly, Sade, known for her rare interviews and performances, and the members of Joy Division/New Order, who have long been estranged from bassist Peter Hook, have not made their intentions clear.
The 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class embodies a diverse spectrum of musical styles and legacies, from rock and metal to hip-hop and soul. Their induction underscores the evolving narrative of rock and popular music history, honoring pioneers and innovators who have shaped the cultural landscape for decades.
