AceShowbiz - After initial excitement in late 2024, the RoboCop reboot under Amazon MGM remains caught in development limbo. According to a recent report from The Ankler, the project has yet to make significant progress despite ongoing efforts by Amazon MGM executive Peter Friedlander.
Peter Friedlander, who joined Amazon MGM as the head of global television after a tenure at Netflix, has been exploring various reboot and remake pitches for the studio’s properties, including RoboCop. In September 2024, the series was set to be written, executive produced, and showrun by Peter Ocko, known for his work on Lodge 49. However, sources reveal that this version had been previously shelved by the former studio administration after a lengthy development phase.
The Ankler’s report highlights that Friedlander is actively listening to pitches from Prime Video executives regarding the sci-fi action franchise, but no major developments or greenlights have been announced yet. An insider described Friedlander as "quietly being decisive on creating matters...he's watching cuts and wanting to make great stuff."
Despite Friedlander’s leadership, Amazon MGM still faces staffing challenges, with several key roles, including the head of scripted content, remaining unfilled. This organizational instability contributes to what an unnamed literary agent calls a "chaotic and confusing" environment. The agent further explained that even with Friedlander’s arrival, "it's still a byzantine place to get a straight answer of what the vision is and who to take stuff to."
Given these internal dynamics, the development of a new RoboCop reboot series appears to be moving slowly and is unlikely to advance rapidly in the near future.
The RoboCop franchise originated with the 1987 film directed by Paul Verhoeven, starring Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer who is murdered and transformed into a cyborg law enforcement officer.
Following the 1987 release, two sequels followed: RoboCop 2 in 1990 and RoboCop 3 in 1993. The franchise also expanded into various TV adaptations, including animated and live-action series.
More recently, MGM and Sony produced a RoboCop remake released in 2014, directed by José Padilha and starring Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and Samuel L. Jackson. Contrary to early reports suggesting a follow-up, no sequel was ever developed.
Amazon MGM’s current plan to reboot RoboCop as a television series represents the latest effort to revive the property. However, the franchise’s future remains uncertain as executive decisions and internal restructuring continue to delay progress.
