FKA Twigs uses California's STAND Act to challenge NDA with Shia LaBeouf, seeking to speak freely about alleged abuse and settlement.

AceShowbiz - FKA Twigs, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett, is taking legal action to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) she signed with ex-partner Shia LaBeouf. The move relies on California's Stand Together Against Non-Disclosure (STAND) Act, which prohibits NDAs that silence victims of sexual harassment and assault from sharing their experiences.
The NDA originated as part of the settlement for a 2020 lawsuit Barnett filed against LaBeouf, accusing him of assault, sexual battery, and emotional distress. Although she withdrew the suit in 2025 to “move on with her life,” the NDA has remained in place—until now.
In December, LaBeouf accused Barnett of breaching the NDA after she spoke to The Hollywood Reporter. When asked if she felt safe following the settlement, Barnett responded, "No, I wouldn't say I feel safe. I feel really passionate about being involved with organizations such as Sistah Space and No More, to help survivors in any way that I can. I think it's less about me at this point and more about looking forward. Just, you know, moving on with my life."
Her legal team has described this statement as “laudable, generic, and benign” in court filings, arguing the NDA should not be used to silence such comments. Barnett’s new lawsuit aims to prove the NDA violates the STAND Act, which protects survivors from being gagged through secret settlements.
Mathew Rosengart, Barnett’s attorney, stated to NBC News that this action is a response to LaBeouf’s “attempt to bully and intimidate Twigs through a frivolous and unlawful secret arbitration he filed against her in December,” which sought to extract money from her.
Earlier this year, FKA Twigs earned a Grammy for her album w. Meanwhile, Shia LaBeouf recently faced legal troubles himself, having been arrested for battery in New Orleans.
