Sturgill Simpson, as Johnny Blue Skies, scores a No. 3 Billboard 200 debut with his physical-only album 'Mutiny After Midnight,' a rare streaming-free success.

AceShowbiz - Sturgill Simpson, performing under his alter ego Johnny Blue Skies, has achieved a remarkable milestone with his latest album Mutiny After Midnight. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart, despite being released exclusively in physical formats.
Last month, Sturgill Simpson announced that Mutiny After Midnight would not be available on streaming platforms, opting instead for a release on vinyl, cassette, and CD. This bold decision has paid off, with the album earning 59,000 equivalent album units in its first week, landing it firmly in the Top 10.
This achievement marks the first time since 2023 that a physical-only release reached such a high position on the Billboard 200. The previous comparable success was Taylor Swift’s Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions, which was released only through independent record stores on Record Store Day. Before that, Garth Brooks’ five-CD set The Anthology: Part I, The First Five Years debuted at No. 4 in 2017.
Simpson highlighted on Instagram that Mutiny After Midnight is not a compilation album like those past releases. “So this is the ONLY new album of original music to do it since ....we don't know?” he wrote, inviting Billboard to clarify the record further.
The album was issued in six different vinyl variants, alongside cassette and CD formats. Though it briefly leaked on YouTube prior to the official release date of March 13, the streaming data was no longer counted by Billboard after late last year. However, the leak helped generate excitement and word-of-mouth buzz ahead of the physical release.
Sturgill Simpson’s success with a physical-only album challenges the prevailing trend toward digital streaming and demonstrates that there remains a strong market for tangible music formats.
