AceShowbiz - The horror sequel Five Nights at Freddy's 2 has officially announced its streaming release in the United States following a successful theatrical run that grossed $239.6 million worldwide. Released in early December 2025, the film is a continuation of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, building on the momentum of the first movie which earned nearly $300 million globally despite a simultaneous streaming release.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 premiered in theaters with a production budget reported between $36 million and $51 million. Although it did not surpass the original's box office tally, the sequel's performance remains impressive, marking it as a commercial success. Three months after its theatrical debut, the film will become available for streaming on Peacock starting April 3, 2026. Prior to that, it has been accessible for purchase or rental on digital platforms since December 23, 2025, and was released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 17, 2026.
The streaming release was announced via a short promotional video posted on X, accompanied by the caption, "You can run, but you can't hide ?." This teaser hints at the film’s signature blend of suspense and horror that fans have come to expect.
Directed once more by Emma Tammi, the film’s screenplay was penned by Scott Cawthon, the original creator of the video game series. The plot centers on Abby Schmidt, portrayed by Piper Rubio, who encounters new dangers a year and a half after the events of the first film. Abby faces manipulation by the sinister animatronic Marionette, an antagonist seeking revenge on nearby parents within the Freddy Fazbear's Pizza universe.
The cast also features returning actors including Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Matthew Lillard, Theodus Crane, and Kellen Goff, reprising their roles from the original movie. New additions to the sequel’s ensemble include Skeet Ulrich, Mckenna Grace, Teo Briones, Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, and Megan Fox. Notably, Matthew "MatPat" Patrick, who made a cameo in the first installment, returns to voice the character Toy Bonnie.
Despite its box office success, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics. The film holds a notably low 16% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many reviewers criticizing it as a decline from the first movie’s already criticized execution, which scored 33% on the same platform. Critics described the sequel as stumbling through typical sequel tropes with little finesse, likening it to a malfunctioning animatronic.
Conversely, audience reception has been much more favorable. The film boasts an 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, praised for its fan service, heightened atmosphere, and intensified scares that align well with the franchise’s lore. This disparity between critics and viewers produced the largest recorded gap on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 68% difference between critic and audience scores.
The original Five Nights at Freddy's film also experienced a significant divide between critical and public opinion, with a 53% difference between its 33% critic score and 86% audience score. Such a split underscores the franchise’s unique appeal to its core fanbase despite critical disapproval.
Although Five Nights at Freddy's 2 was panned by critics, its impressive box office returns and strong audience approval suggest a solid fan following and potential for continued success. This indicates that the franchise maintains a dedicated viewership comprised largely of video game enthusiasts and horror fans, which should help the sequel perform well on Peacock once it begins streaming.
With its upcoming availability on Peacock, Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is poised to reach a wider audience eager for horror content and loyal followers of the franchise, further cementing its place in the horror genre’s contemporary landscape.
