AceShowbiz - Harry Styles recently captivated fans and music legends alike with his rendition of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" during a BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge session.
The "Aperture" artist showcased several tracks from his latest album, Kiss All the Time, including a standout cover of the iconic 1985 hit originally by British duo Tears for Fears, comprised of Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal.
Styles' performance maintained the essence of the classic new-wave track while infusing it with his signature pop-rock style. The arrangement was further enriched by the addition of trumpet and saxophone backing musicians, adding a fresh musical layer to the familiar tune.
The cover received enthusiastic responses from fans across social media platforms and the YouTube comments, but the most notable praise came directly from Tears for Fears themselves. Posting a clip of the cover on Instagram, the band expressed their admiration, stating they were "loving this cover" by Styles.
"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" remains the band’s signature song, originally released in 1985—years before Harry Styles was born. It achieved the No. 1 spot in the U.S. charts and ranked within the Top 20 in more than a dozen countries worldwide. The band’s other hits include "Mad World," "Shout," "Head Over Heels," and "Sowing the Seeds of Love."
Styles is far from the first artist to put their spin on this classic. For instance, Lorde recorded a moody version for the 2013 film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Additionally, Weezer covered the track on their self-titled cover album in 2019 and even performed it live with Smith and Orzabal at Coachella that year.
Interestingly, another member of the former boy band One Direction, Niall Horan, also delivered an impressive cover of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." He mixed it with his own song "If You Leave Me" during his headline performance at Electric Picnic in 2023.
Listeners can find Horan’s rendition online, with the Tears for Fears song beginning around the three-minute mark.
Beyond his musical talents, Harry Styles is set to both host and perform as the musical guest on this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live. Just last weekend, he made a memorable cameo by interrupting Ryan Gosling’s opening monologue, humorously distracting the actor multiple times from his speech.
The playful interruption drew laughs as Gosling joked, "Your coolness is becoming a bit of an issue," hinting at a friendly rivalry that may continue in the upcoming show.
