AceShowbiz - An all-star ensemble led by Miles Caton and Raphael Saadiq delivered a powerful performance of the song "I Lied to You" from the film Sinners at the Oscars. This track, co-written by Saadiq and composer Ludwig Göransson, is nominated for Best Original Song.
The live performance featured a remarkable lineup including Misty Copeland, Eric Gales, Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Christone "Kingfish" Ingram, Jayme Lawson, Li Jun Li, Bobby Rush, Shaboozey, and Alice Smith joining Caton and Saadiq on stage. Their collaboration brought the song’s emotional depth and cultural significance vividly to life.
The stage design recreated the film’s iconic Club Juke, setting the scene for a dynamic and immersive experience that reflected the spirit of the movie. The performance showcased an eclectic mix of dance styles, from modern ballet represented by Copeland to twerking, breakdancing, Xiqu, and Zaouli, highlighting the diverse heritage of Black music and dance.
During the performance, the camera captured a joyful moment of Sinners director Ryan Coogler, whose smile embodied the celebration and preservation of cultural history that the film champions.
In Sinners, which has a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, the song "I Lied to You" appears at a crucial narrative point. The character Sammie Moore, also known as Preacher Boy and portrayed by Caton, is introduced at the juke joint where the story unfolds. He explains, "They call me Preacher Boy on count of my daddy being a pastor. I wrote this song for him." Sammie then performs the raw blues song, capturing his defiance and aspirations.
The song interweaves the history and future of Black music as it becomes a defining moment for Sammie’s character. The scene culminates with the juke joint’s roof igniting as Sammie sings the final refrain, "Somebody take me in your arms."
"I Lied to You" is nominated alongside other songs for Best Original Song, including "Dear Me" from Diane Warren: Relentless, "Golden" from Kpop Demon Hunters, "Sweet Dreams of Joy" from Viva Verdi!, and "Train Dreams" from Train Dreams. The nominees feature renowned songwriters like Diane Warren, Nicholas Pike, Nick Cave, and Bryce Dessner.
