AceShowbiz - Jack White recently sparked controversy with comments about the songwriting approach popularized by Taylor Swift. In an interview with The Guardian, the Detroit rocker expressed his disinterest in the autobiographical style that Swift and many pop artists have embraced, particularly focusing on public breakup narratives.
When asked if his songs are "entirely autobiographical," White responded, "not too much," explaining that he finds writing strictly about personal experiences somewhat tedious. He elaborated, "Now, it's become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired break-ups, which I don't find interesting at all."
Continuing, White emphasized his preference for songwriting that does not revolve solely around his own life events. He stated, "I think it's a little bit boring for me to write about myself. Even if I've had a really interesting day, I feel like I've already lived that, I don't need to go through it every time I sing this song."
He also noted a protective stance around painful personal experiences, saying he would avoid exposing such moments for public consumption where they might be disparaged online. This candid critique of the "Taylor Swift way" of songwriting has yet to receive a public response from Swift herself.
Swift has, however, previously defended her songwriting abilities when questioned by other artists. One notable incident involved Blur's Damon Albarn in 2022, who claimed that Swift did not write her own songs. The tweet containing Albarn's comment quickly went viral, reaching the pop superstar.
Swift replied emphatically on X, asserting, "I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don't have to like my songs but it's really f---ed up to try and discredit my writing. WOW." Albarn soon issued an unreserved apology, clarifying that discrediting her songwriting was the last thing he intended.
