AceShowbiz - The latest showcase for Resident Evil Requiem may not have unveiled groundbreaking revelations, but it did share intriguing insights about the upcoming game. During the concise 12-minute presentation, Capcom explored the distinctions between playing as Grace and Leon, emphasizing the contrast between genuine survival horror and action-oriented gameplay.
Notably, one option available while playing as Grace reintroduces a feature that had previously been discarded. According to the Resident Evil Showcase available on YouTube, Resident Evil Requiem will allow players to use ink ribbons when controlling Grace. Ink ribbons, a hallmark of the first several Resident Evil titles, provide a limited resource for saving progress at designated points. Although players can discover more throughout the game, depleting the ink ribbons renders players unable to save, intensifying the stress associated with resource management.
Ink Ribbons Are Making An RE9 Comeback
While it may seem that ink ribbons were left behind ages ago in the Resident Evil franchise, they made a resurgence in 2019 through the hardcore mode of the Resident Evil 2 remake. However, the Resident Evil 3 remake saw their removal yet again, making the RE2 revival an isolated case. Resident Evil 4 never utilized ink ribbons, and its remake continues that trend. In Requiem, ink ribbons are linked to a difficulty setting. Instead of being exclusive to Hardcore mode, they now form part of the Standard (Classic) setting, which also limits autosaves while playing as Grace. Unlike Grace, Leon's gameplay is unaffected by these limitations, supporting a broader design strategy aimed at making Grace's experience reminiscent of Resident Evil 2.
Resident Evil Requiem Is Multi-Track Drifting
The optional return of ink ribbons may not appeal to everyone, but it underscores Capcom's dedication to reviving elements of classic Resident Evil gameplay. In an era where it's uncommon to restrict save locations, incorporating a limited resource for saving represents a notable divergence from the norms of contemporary AAA gaming.
