Despite critical scorn, 2015's Vacation reboot is a streaming sensation! It's proving that a bad Rotten Tomatoes score isn't the final word.

AceShowbiz - A decade after facing a critical onslaught that would make even Aunt Edna blush, the 2015 reboot of the beloved Chevy Chase comedy classic, National Lampoon’s Vacation, has found an unexpected second life. Initially dismissed as a failed franchise re-launcher, Vacation (2015) is now enjoying a surprising resurgence, climbing the ranks on streaming platforms and proving that critical reception isn't always the final word on a film's longevity or appeal.
Despite its harsh initial reception, with reviewers hanging a dismal 27% Rotten Tomatoes score around its neck, the Vacation reboot is currently cozy at #9 on Netflix’s top 10 U.S. streaming movies chart as of October 20, 2025 (according to Flixpatrol). While this streaming success may not immediately pave the way for a new series of Vacation movies, it highlights the enduring draw of the Griswold family saga. Financially, the Ed Helms-led film was a mild success, grossing $107 million worldwide against a budget of $31 million, a stark contrast to the original National Lampoon’s Vacation, which garnered critical acclaim (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and earned $64 million in 1983, equating to an impressive $220 million adjusted for inflation.
The Vacation franchise has had its share of highs and lows. Following the original's success, the Griswold family embarked on a trip to Europe with a re-cast Rusty and Audrey, but National Lampoon’s European Vacation proved less successful, sitting at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, released in 1989, swooped in like Santa Claus to restore the franchise's fortunes. It received strong reviews (72% on Rotten Tomatoes) and has since become a cherished holiday classic, boasting an 86% audience score that reflects its widespread adoration.
Among the many fans of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is actress Juliette Lewis, who played Audrey Griswold in the film. Speaking to Kelly Clarkson in 2024, Lewis became visibly emotional discussing the movie’s profound impact: "You know, I'm midlife, so I'm going through many important emotional transitional things, seizing beautiful — learning how to appreciate what you have. And so I get really — I'm going to cry. Christmas Vacation is so, it's so touching that every year — I was just 15. Sorry, I didn't mean to cry. People who have lost their parents, or whatever, what it meant to them. It's a tradition. And so what I'm saying is no, you can never imagine that is ever going to happen in a film you do."
While Christmas Vacation effectively marked the emotional high point for the original series, later installments like 1997’s Vegas Vacation and 2003’s Christmas Vacation 2 largely faded from public consciousness. The 2015 Vacation reboot was conceived as a legacy sequel, with Ed Helms stepping into the role of a grown-up Rusty Griswold, alongside Leslie Mann as his wife Audrey. The film notably featured cameo appearances from original stars Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo, reprising their iconic roles as Clark and Ellen Griswold, connecting the new generation to the roots of the beloved comedic saga, which itself originated from a John Hughes short story titled "Vacation '58."
