AceShowbiz - Elle Fanning is the latest addition to the "Predator" cinematic universe. On Wednesday, April 23, 20th Century Studios debuted the first teaser trailer for "Predator: Badlands", which follows a young Predator character (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) who embarks on a solo journey on a mysterious mission.
The trailer shows the Predator character take center stage as a protagonist for the first time in the decades-old sci-fi franchise and team up with Fanning's character Thia, who appears to be a robot.
The movie "is set in the future on a remote planet, where a young Predator, outcast from his clan, finds an unlikely ally in Thia (Fanning) and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary," according to a synopsis.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg and co-written by Trachtenberg and Patrick Aison, the same team from 2022's "Prey", the movie marks the ninth film in the "Predator" franchise, including the two "Alien vs. Predator" movies produced in the 2000s.
"He's still badass, but there's something there that touches you emotionally too," Trachtenberg told Empire in November of Dek, the movie's unique lead character.
Schuster-Koloamatangi, who portrays Dek, gets his big break with the movie; he previously appeared in 2023's "Red, White & Brass" and series like "Far North", "Upright", and "The Panthers".
"Creating a character you connect with but are also super-intimidated by has been challenging," Trachtenberg added of working on "Badlands" at that time. "But exciting."
Fanning teased the new ground that "Badlands" covers during her appearance at CinemaCon in April. "I was so intrigued and so struck by Dan's vision for this film, and I think it's really his ability to break new ground within the Predator universe that it just speaks to his creativity and his passion for this world," the actress said.
The "Super 8" actress teased that her role in the movie stands out as "very different than the work that I've done in the past."
"Something unprecedented happens in this movie and my character is not the one being chased," she said. "My character actually teams up with the Predator and you get to see him in a completely new light."
"Predator: Badlands" is set to thrill audiences in theaters on November 7.
