AceShowbiz - Michelle Williams dropped by "Watch What Happens Live" to promote her new FX series "Dying for S*x". During the interview, host Andy Cohen seized the moment to appreciate one of her most acclaimed works: Ang Lee's 2005 drama "Brokeback Mountain".
Reflecting on its impact, Cohen shared, "May I gush to you about what an important movie 'Brokeback Mountain' was to me? And it is still, I think, in my top two movies of all time."
Williams, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role as Alma, the wife of Heath Ledger's cowboy character, responded thoughtfully, "Yes, because people were so open about it."
"I remember doing the junket, you don't get an opportunity to see a lot of grown men cry, and that was the moment I think that we all knew it was going to be special to people," she said.
The conversation shifted to the infamous 2006 Oscars, where Sandra Bullock's "Crash" took home the Best Picture trophy over "Brokeback Mountain". The win remains one of the most contentious in Oscar history.
Echoing the sentiments of many fans and critics, Cohen remarked, "I was very upset about the Best Picture loss," to which Williams heartfully agreed and took a jab at the winner, "I mean, 'Crash'? Is that what won?" Cohen chimed in, "Thank you, I mean, who's talking about 'Crash' right now? I hear a pin drop. Yes, very upset!"
Lee himself admitted there was a barrier that's difficult to break at the Oscars, "Back then, ['Brokeback Mountain'] had a ceiling. We got a lot of support - up to that much. It has that feeling. I wasn't holding a grudge or anything. It's just how they were."
While the debate over the "Crash" vs. "Brokeback Mountain" Best Picture outcome continues, the legacy and cultural significance of Ang Lee's masterwork endure.
