AceShowbiz - Angela Bassett, a luminary in the world of cinema, reflected on the bittersweet moments surrounding her Oscar journey. The acclaimed actress got candid about her emotional experience of losing the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2023 Oscars.
Nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Bassett lost to Jamie Lee Curtis, who won for her role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once." Her reaction as she looked dismayed when the winner was announced went viral, sparking debate online.
In an interview with Town & Country, Bassett did not shy away from the controversy. She defended herself, "I found it interesting that I wouldn't be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving."
"I love applauding people. But in that moment… I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn't think that was a gift. I thought it was a given."
The loss was palpable, but Bassett's journey took an uplifting turn when she was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2024. The actress took the stage to acknowledge the "trailblazing" Black actresses who paved the way for her.
"They were my North Star, my guiding light, proof that while the road may not be without curves and bumps, there was a way to fulfill what I believed deep in my soul was my destiny," Bassett remarked passionately.
Bassett's gratitude extended to iconic figures such as Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson, and Rosalind Cash. "It was standing on their strong, spiritually fortified shoulders that I often was sustained," she expressed.
"Because had it not been for their resilience, continuing to fight through their fears and the uncertainty and their willingness as they fought for every role, I would not have had a representation of what was possible for me."
Reflecting on her early career, Bassett shared with Town & Country the struggles and victories that marked her path. "You're just trying to find little pieces where you are, little moments of daylight to be able to do this. So no matter how small it was, it was just a joy and a blessing," she recalled.
Despite the challenges, Bassett cherished every opportunity to showcase her talent and refused to take any moment for granted.
Currently, Bassett stars in the Netflix thriller series "Zero Day" alongside Robert De Niro, portraying the President of the United States. The show features a star-studded cast including Joan Allen, Dan Stevens, Lizzy Caplan, and Matthew Modine.
Bassett's illustrious career spans decades, filled with roles in films like "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" and "Malcolm X," and TV series like "American Horror Story" and "9-1-1." Her portrayal of Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do with It" becomes one of the highlights in her career - it was a role she played with immense dedication and grit.
As Angela Bassett continues to blaze trails and break barriers, her story serves as an inspiration to young people everywhere. Her journey from the pangs of disappointment to the heights of honorary recognition embodies the essence of resilience and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
