AceShowbiz - Adam Lambert dished on the challenges of doing a Broadway show. He starred in "Cabaret" and recalled halting his performance to admonish audience members who laughed when he delivered one particular song.
He defended his onstage outburst on "The View", explaining his rationale, "One of the big themes in the show is antisemitism. There's a scene where I sing 'If You Could See Her' to a gorilla, representing a Jewish person facing societal prejudice."
"It's actually about a really dark, sad thing about how society sees people," he elaborated. "And they make it into the gorilla being the Jewish person."
Lambert recalled someone in the audience cracked up after he sang the line, "If you could see her through my eyes, she wouldn't look Jewish at all." His reaction was quick as he told them, "No, no, no, no. This isn't comedy. Pay attention."
The actor also emphasized the parallels between the themes of "Cabaret" and current events. "The show is very relevant," he said. "It's eerie to be up there talking about things that are happening again in our country."
Lambert's Broadway run in "Cabaret" began in September 2023 and will conclude in March 2025. The musical has received critical acclaim for its timely message and Lambert's powerful performance as the Emcee.
