'Lanterns' Series Finds Its Villain in Ulrich Thomsen

Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen has been tapped to portray Sinestro, a notorious Green Lantern villain obsessed with defeating Hal Jordan, in the upcoming HBO series 'Lanterns.'

Thomsen has a diverse acting portfolio, including roles in Danish films like "Festen" and American series like "Banshee," "The Blacklist," and "The New Pope."

"So excited to share this. New to me that genre. But hell, it’s going to be fun," he gushed on Instagram.

The upcoming HBO superhero series follows intergalactic police officers John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. The cast includes Kyle Chandler as Jordan, Aaron Pierre as Stewart, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan.

"Lanterns" is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with James Hawes directing the first two episodes. It is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios.

Sinestro was originally a member of the Green Lantern Corps but was cast out for abusing his power. He has a long history in the Green Lantern comics, known for his manipulative nature and obsession with defeating Hal Jordan. Sinestro was previously portrayed by Mark Strong in the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds.

Ulrich Thomsen's portrayal of Sinestro is expected to bring depth and complexity to the character, exploring his motivations and his tragic fall from grace. The series is set to release in late 2025 or early 2026.
