AceShowbiz - Brad Pitt once had grand ambitions to portray late musician Jeff Buckley on the silver screen, but the late musician's mother, Mary Guibert, had reservations. The story, as revealed in Variety, goes back to the early 2000s, just a few years after Buckley's tragic death by drowning in 1997.
Pitt, eager to secure Guibert's approval, invited her to lunch at his home and even his wedding to Jennifer Aniston. While Guibert appreciated the gesture, she questioned if Pitt could truly embody her son on screen. "We're going to dye your hair, put brown contact lenses on those baby blues, and you're going to open your mouth and Jeff's voice is going to come out?" she remembered asking Pitt.
Despite her skepticism, Pitt remained determined to bring Buckley's story to life. However, Guibert was hesitant about a dramatized biopic, feeling that it wouldn't do justice to her son's remarkable life and legacy.
Instead, Guibert and director Amy Berg embarked on a journey to create a documentary about Buckley. Berg, who had previously been nominated for an Oscar for her documentary "Deliver Us from Evil," shared Guibert's vision and was granted access to Buckley's archive.
"Once I started listening to his voicemail messages and his DAP player and demos and reading his journals, I just couldn't imagine it being anything but a documentary," said Berg. "And I just didn't know how you could kind of replicate Jeff in that scripted sense."
The final outcome, "It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley," premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2025. While Pitt did not star in the film, he served as an executive producer and assisted in preserving and digitizing Buckley's belongings.
