AceShowbiz - Jason Momoa announces his imminent return to the DC Universe, but this time not as the aquatic hero Aquaman. Instead, Momoa has been confirmed to play the antihero Lobo in the upcoming film "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow."
Momoa has long expressed his passion for the character, so his enthusiasm for this new role is palpable. "I collect comics, and I don't do so much anymore, but [Lobo] was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I'm like, 'Hello? It's the perfect role,' " he shared during the press tour for "Aquaman 2".
This casting decision officially marks a significant departure for Momoa from his role as Aquaman, a character he has embodied since a cameo in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016).
He subsequently starred in "Justice League" (2017) and headlined his solo film in 2018. While Aquaman turned out to be a massive box office hit, grossing over $1 billion, its sequel, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," failed to replicate that success, earning $439 million and receiving lukewarm reviews.
Despite the mixed outcomes, Momoa's presence within the DC Extended Universe remains strong. Before the Lobo casting was confirmed, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios, had signaled that some beloved actors from the previous DCEU regime might continue under their new vision - and Momoa is the first to do so, albeit in a freshly minted role.
"Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" will be directed by Craig Gillespie and stars "House of the Dragon" actress Milly Alcock as Supergirl alongside Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle. The film is based on the comic book series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, with a screenplay penned by Ana Nogueira. Production is set to commence on January 13, with the movie slated for a theatrical release on June 26, 2026.
Lobo, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, first appeared in the 1983 comic Omega Men No. 3. Known for his violent and irreverent personality, the antihero hails from the planet Czarnia and possesses superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and invulnerability. Fans are eagerly awaiting Momoa's interpretation of this chaotic but beloved character.
With Gunn hinting that the new adaptation of Supergirl will be "much more hardcore" than previous versions, audiences can expect a compelling and grittier take on the character dynamics in the upcoming film. As the DC Universe continues to evolve, Jason Momoa's transition from Aquaman to Lobo signifies an exciting new chapter for both the actor and the franchise.
