'Succession' star Brian Cox didn't hold back as he unleashed a scathing attack on the Academy Awards and throws shade at his peer Gary Oldman in the process.

AceShowbiz - In a no-holds-barred interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brian Cox, the acclaimed star of "Succession," aired his frustrations with the Academy Awards, calling the Oscars "absolute nonsense."

As he criticized the awards system's focus on films released towards the end of the year, Cox did not shy away from voicing his dissatisfaction over being overlooked for his role as Winston Churchill in the 2017 film "Churchill."

At 78, Cox has never been nominated for an Oscar, despite having a storied career filled with accolades, including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Reflecting on the Oscar snub, he lamented, "The Oscars are absolute nonsense because everything that's judged in the Oscars, it's not a year's work. It's just the work that comes out between Thanksgiving and Christmas."

Cox criticized this narrow window of consideration, describing it as making the awards "a fallacy" and highlighting that significant work often goes unnoticed outside this timeframe.

Cox's contention was notably evident when he discussed his portrayal of Winston Churchill in "Churchill." Released in the summer of 2017, "Churchill" was an independent film that did not benefit from the robust promotional backing that studio films often receive.

That same year, Gary Oldman's performance as Churchill in "Darkest Hour" secured the Best Actor Oscar. Cox, confident in his own performance, remarked, "I still think my performance is a better performance," expressing disappointment that his film "never even got a look."

Despite the system's flaws, Cox acknowledged exceptions, pointing to movies like "Oppenheimer" and "Everything Everywhere All at Once," which succeeded with release dates outside the typical Oscar season. However, such instances are rare, and Cox's experience reflects broader grievances with how the Oscars operate.

Brian Cox's dissatisfaction with how awards are given is not limited to the Oscars. He has also been vocal about the state of the film industry, particularly with the dominance of Marvel and DC films.

At the Edinburgh International Film Festival, he criticized contemporary cinema for losing its plot and embracing a "grandiose element" that he believes contributes to its decline. "You are kind of losing the plot," he declared, emphasizing that while blockbusters like "Deadpool" and "Wolverine" generate significant revenue, the quality and meaningful storytelling are often compromised.

Cox's candid reflections offer a thought-provoking perspective on the entertainment industry, challenging young people to think critically about media and its accolades. While he admires the work of peers like Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins, his commentary suggests that recognition in Hollywood is as much about timing and backing as it is about talent.
