AceShowbiz - As the 25th anniversary of "Malcolm in the Middle" approaches, Disney+ has officially announced that the fan-favorite series will be revived.
The limited series, comprising four episodes, brings back original cast members Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kaczmarek, who will reprise their roles as Malcolm, Hal, and Lois, respectively. All episodes of the original series are currently available to stream on Hulu or Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers.
Series creator Linwood Boomer returns to write and executive produce the new episodes while Ken Kwapis will direct all four installments. The original production team, including executive producers Tracy Katsky, Gail Berman, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, and Natalie Lehmann, also return to bring the beloved show back to life.
According to the official logline, the plot of the revival revolves around Malcolm and his daughter being drawn back into family chaos when Hal and Lois demand their attendance at their 40th wedding anniversary party.
"I have been waiting for this moment for 18 years," Muniz shared in a social media post, expressing his excitement for the revival. Jane Kaczmarek humorously added, "What a delight that I get to yell at that kid again."
" 'Malcolm in the Middle' is a landmark sitcom that captured the essence of family life with humor, heart, and relatability," said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. "Its hilarious and heartfelt portrayal of a lovably chaotic family resonated with audiences of all ages, and we're so excited to welcome the original cast back to bring that magic to life again."
The original series aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006, spanning seven seasons and 151 episodes. It became pivotal in popularizing the single-camera comedy format, earning seven Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and even a Grammy. Karey Burke, president of 20th Television, emphasized the show's influence, " 'Malcolm in the Middle' literally changed the face of the television comedy landscape when it premiered two decades ago, redefining what the genre could be."
In addition to the revival of "Malcolm in the Middle," other early 2000s classics are also being revisited. ABC is developing a "Scrubs" reboot, and Hulu has ordered a pilot for a new iteration of "Prison Break." Amidst the nostalgia, fans of the single-camera comedy can eagerly await more hilarious and heartwarming moments from the quirky family when the revival premieres on Disney+.
