Screenwriter Richard Curtis reveals that a potential sequel to the beloved rom-com was abandoned after Julia Roberts objected to its premise of a divorce between her and Hugh Grant's characters.

AceShowbiz - Richard Curtis, the writer of the iconic 1999 romantic comedy "Notting Hill," has disclosed that he had been working on a sequel to the film. However, the project was halted due to objections from Julia Roberts, who played the lead role of Anna Scott.
In an interview with IndieWire, Curtis revealed that his proposed sequel would have depicted Anna and William Thacker (Hugh Grant) getting divorced. However, Roberts rejected the idea, deeming it a "very poor idea."
In a separate interview, Hugh Grant recently made public of his criticism towards his character in "Notting Hill," William Thacker, calling him "despicable." Grant had expressed disappointment in Thacker's passivity during a scene where Anna faced paparazzi at his doorstep.
"I've never had a girlfriend, or indeed, now wife, who hasn't said, 'Why the hell didn't you stop her? What's wrong with you?' " he said. "And I don't really have an answer to that. It was how it was written and I think he's despicable, really."
