The service was held at St. Mary's Church in Amersham, England, a short distance from Payne's hometown. His casket arrived in a horse-drawn carriage, with his parents, Karen and Geoff Payne, visibly moved.
Payne's One Direction bandmates, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, were present, as were his girlfriend Kate Cassidy and friends such as James Corden, Damian Hurley and Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud.
Cassidy, who had been with Payne in Argentina before his death, spoke at the service, expressing her love and gratitude for him. She recalled their plans to marry and start a family.
Cheryl Cole, Payne's ex-girlfriend and the mother of their 7-year-old son Bear, attended with her Girls Aloud bandmates. She had previously requested privacy for her family and expressed concern about the media attention surrounding Payne's death.
The funeral followed Payne's tragic passing on October 16, after he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. A preliminary investigation concluded that he sustained multiple injuries and was likely unconscious at the time of the fall.
