AceShowbiz - Alexa PenaVega remembered her time on "Dancing with the Stars" where she was competing against her husband Carlos PenaVega. She admitted it was challenging due to the competitive and flirty nature of the environment.
While they both placed commendably, with Alexa finishing sixth and Carlos fourth, the journey wasn't smooth, particularly for Carlos when it came to dealing with judge Julianne Hough.
In a revealing conversation on Cheryl Burke's "Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans" podcast, Alexa shared an intricate aspect of their DWTS experience, "I will say what was really hard for Carlos was, you know, he's being judged by Jules the whole time while he's on the show," she explained. "But then he has to go work with her right after. And he was like, this is so weird because she won't even say hi."
Carlos and Hough found themselves working together again shortly after "DWTS" on Fox's live televised remake of "Grease", where he played Kenickie. The interaction between the two continued to be awkward.
Reflecting on this, Alexa said, "Carlos had to go work with Jules right after Dancing with the Stars on Grease Liveā¦ She's not saying hi, this is super weird. I don't know the dynamic, but I'm just gonna be nice."
Despite this, neither Alexa nor Carlos harbors any negativity toward Hough. "I'm sure it's just a judge thing," Alexa reasoned. "She wasn't mean or anything, she just couldn't interact with us at all."
Behind the scenes, Alexa and Carlos faced their own set of pressures. She mentioned the high drama and the constant flirtations as significant challenges, especially given Carlos's jealousy. "For Carlos at that season of his life, he was such a jealous man that even though he understood the dynamic, it was still hard for him," she disclosed.
Setting boundaries was crucial. "I love [pro partner] Mark [Ballas]. I absolutely, we got along great. But, if it was ever flirty, I'd just be like, 'Don't do that.' I was kinda a little mean, but it was only to set good boundaries," Alexa said.
These boundaries were vital for maintaining their marriage while navigating the show's complex dynamics. "Our marriage is still first," she added, emphasizing their commitment to prioritizing their relationship.
The show has seen its fair share of relationships blossom and break. Yet, Alexa's takeaway remains positive. "If I could go back, it doesn't even matter. It just should be fun. You should just go out there and have fun," she concluded, underlining the joy and feel-good nature of Dancing With the Stars.
"Dancing With the Stars" continues to be a beloved show, not just for the dancing but for the real-life stories and relationships that unfold on its stage.
