Skipping the star-studded premiere of his latest film 'Wicked', director Jon M. Chu explains the reason behind his absence while sending love and support to the cast and crew.

AceShowbiz - Jon M. Chu, the director known for "Crazy Rich Asians" and "In the Heights," had a compelling reason to miss the star-studded Los Angeles premiere of his latest project, "Wicked." On November 9, Chu shared through his Instagram Stories that he and his wife, Kristin Hodge, were welcoming their fifth child - a baby girl.
"This movie has always moved in mysterious ways," Chu wrote, capturing the serendipity of the situation. "Today is a day I've been dreaming about for a long time. Two babies (a movie and a little girl) all at one time and I truly couldn't be happier I won't be able to be at the Wicked Premiere tonight with all of you."
Chu continued to update his followers, explaining that a change of plans occurred at "about 4am this morning" as his wife went into labor. He added humorously, "and no we will not be naming her Galphaba," cleverly nodding to the "Wicked" character.
Despite missing the premiere, Chu made sure to send his "love to our insanely talented cast and crew tonight," encouraging fans to do the same. He shared that his newborn, with even a fraction of the bravery possessed by his wife and the film's leading actors - Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, and Marissa Bode - would also "defy gravity one day."
"Send a little extra welcome to my little girl," he added. So Ariana Grande's brother Frankie did send a heartwarming message from the red carpet to the director and his loved ones on the new addition to their family.
Jon M. Chu and Kristin Hodge are already parents to four children: daughters Willow, 7, and Ruby, 3; son Jonathan Heights, 5; and a younger child named Iggy, who is 20 months old. This joyous announcement comes after Chu revealed in October that they were expecting their fifth child, a daughter, while being honored at the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards.
He candidly told Extra, "I've just finished the movie, so I'm sort of just letting everything go and just starting to enjoy it. I have a new baby coming, so in my head, that's what I'm focused on. She could come any day now. It's going to be a little daughter."
Chu has previously stepped back from professional commitments due to family priorities. In 2021, he announced on social media that he was stepping down from directing the Disney+ series "Willow" after the production schedule changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, coinciding with the expected arrival of their third child.
As Chu continues to balance his professional endeavors with his growing family, his latest update serves as a delightful reminder that sometimes, real-life events can be just as magical as the movies we love.
