AceShowbiz - Whoopi Goldberg has disclosed that adjustments is being made to the production of Disney's long-awaited threequel, "Sister Act 3," following the tragic loss of her friend and "Sister Act" collaborator Maggie Smith.
During an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Goldberg expressed that the film's production had to be shifted due to Smith's passing on September 27. When Fallon inquired about Pope Francis' response to Goldberg's offer for a cameo, she reflected on Smith's potential involvement.
"We're having to make some readjustments, because we just lost Maggie Smith, as you know," Goldberg said, indicating that Smith was intended to reprise her role as Reverend Mother.
The Oscar winner remained optimistic, stating, "We will get it done. It's a shift."
Goldberg has been vocal about her efforts to reunite the "Sister Act" cast for the new installment. She has publicly appealed to her former co-stars, including Kathy Najimy, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jenifer Lewis, and Tyler Perry, to join the project.
Perry, who came on board as a producer, stated in 2022 that a "good script" was in place. Goldberg's "The View" co-hosts have also expressed their desire to participate as nuns.
Goldberg's emotional reunion with her "Sister Act 2" cast members on "The View" in June 2023 brought tears to her eyes.
The original "Sister Act" (1992) featured Goldberg as Deloris, a lounge singer who enters witness protection within a convent after witnessing a crime. The sequel (1993) depicted her leading a choir of students to reinvigorate their school's music program.
The current status of "Sister Act 3" remains uncertain as adjustments are made due to Smith's passing. However, Goldberg's determination and the support of her former co-stars suggest that the project will eventually come to fruition.
