A rep for Goldberg says 'Sister Act 3', which is being developed for Disney's streaming service, 'is not a continuation' of 'Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit'.

AceShowbiz - The nuns will be back in the act in "Sister Act 3". More than 25 years after the first movie was launched to positive reviews and commercial success, Disney is developing a new installment of the comedy film series for its upcoming streaming service Disney+.

According to Entertainment Weekly, "Insecure" executive producer Regina Hicks and "Star" showrunner Karin Gist are penning the script for the new movie. Plot details are currently unknown, but it likely won't be a sequel to 1993's "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit".

A representative for Whoopi Goldberg, who took the lead role of Deloris Wilson a.k.a. Sister Mary Clarence, says of the project, "It is our understanding that this is not a continuation." On whether or not the actress will return for the new movie, the rep makes it clear that "Whoopi is not involved."

Goldberg previously hinted at Disney's plan for a remake of "Sister Act" during an interview with "Good Morning Britain" in September. "We've been all over Disney begging and they've decided that they're going to go in a different direction with 'Sister Act'," she said. "So it won't be 'Sister Act 3', it'll be a brand-new rendition of 'Sister Act'." Of her possible involvement in the remake, she added, "And I guess I'll walk through a scene and that's how they'll say I was part of it."

Meanwhile, actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry has expressed his interest in making "Sister Act 3" which would reunite Goldberg and her "Nobody's Fool" co-star Tiffany Haddish. "We're talking about a few things," the "Tyler Perry's a Madea Family Funeral" director and writer teased while appearing on "The View" in late October. "I think there should be a (new) 'Sister Act'... Tiffany Haddish and Whoopi Goldberg in 'Sister Act 3'. That could happen!"

"Sister Act" follows lounge singer Deloris Wilson who is placed in witness protection with Saint Katherine's Parish after she witnessed her mob boss boyfriend murdered his chauffeur. As she struggles to adapt to austere convent life, she joins the convent choir and trains them to become better singers.

The first movie grossed $231.6 million worldwide, becoming the eighth-highest-grossing film worldwide in 1992. "Sister Act 2", however, failed to repeat the success of its predecessor, getting negative reviews from critics and only grossing over $57 million in the United States against a $38 million budget.
