AceShowbiz - In an exceptional "Saturday Night Live" promo, John Mulaney was joined by a surprise guest who took over the writing duties, "Bob Dylan." James Austin Johnson, known for his uncanny Donald Trump impersonation, transformed into a spot-on rendition of the folk icon from the Theme Time Radio Hour era.
Wearing Dylan's signature white cap and grey suit, Johnson began by reminiscing about meeting music producer Shooter Jennings in Luxembourg, referencing a song from Dylan's 2019 album. Mulaney, surprised by the complex promo, questioned the writer's identity before Johnson revealed himself.
"Season 50, they're busting out the big guns," Johnson drawled in Dylan's unmistakable voice. "I won a Nobel in literature."
Mulaney's attempts to simplify the intro were met with Dylan's unique insights. "Hey, it's great to be back in the Big Apple. Herman Melville was born here, author of 'Moby Dick'," Johnson stated. "That's the ultimate fish story if you ask me."
As Mulaney pointed out the inaccuracies, Dylan insisted his writing was "just getting its footing." However, he suggested trying a different cue card with a more energetic tone.
New cast member Jane Wickline made a brief appearance, adding to the promo's absurdity. When Johnson proposed hosting "SNL" with musical guest Charlie Mingus, Mulaney countered that it was actually Chappell Roan performing this weekend.
Dylan's final line underscored his comedic brilliance, "You know, the night that Judas betrayed Christ, they broke bread, and he said, 'One of you's gonna sell me up the river, rat me out, send me to the Pharisees. I think it's gonna be you.' "
The promo showcases James Austin Johnson's remarkable ability to capture Bob Dylan's mannerisms, speech patterns, and quirky humor. It's a testament to his talent and a sure sign that his 21st Century Bob Dylan character is one to watch for on future "SNL" episodes.
