AceShowbiz - On "Piers Morgan Uncensored," a clash erupted between "America's Got Talent" judge Howie Mandel and former "The X Factor" contestant Katie Waissel over the responsibility of talent shows in Liam Payne's mental health struggles and subsequent death.
Waissel, who competed alongside Payne in the show's 7th season, argued that "there is a legal and moral duty of care" between shows and participants. Mandel, however, insisted that everyone has a "moral and legal duty to take care of those people that we come across in life."
Mandel claimed that shows like "AGT" provide psychological support, but Waissel countered that she experienced "no duty of care" on "X Factor" and alleged that the provided welfare officer was unqualified. James Barr, another panelist, supported Waissel's claims and accused the entertainment industry of bearing responsibility.
Mandel dismissed Barr's criticism, doubling down on the claim that psychologists are present on shows he works on to assist contestants in need and rejected contestants who may face greater challenges.
Host Piers Morgan defended Mandel's perspective and made backhanded comments about Waissel, saying she's not comparable to One Direction.
Waissel's comments sparked a call for investigations into the treatment of participants on talent shows. Payne's toxicology report revealed a combination of drugs in his system, including "pink cocaine," at the time of his fatal fall from a hotel balcony.
Despite Simon Cowell's silence on the controversy, he expressed his devastation following Payne's death, stating that he was "heartbroken" and filled with "love and respect" for the singer.
