The Recording Academy has relaxed its rules for the Best New Artist category, citing inclusivity and resulting in a record number of eligible artists for the upcoming awards show.

AceShowbiz - In a move that has both expanded the pool of eligible artists and fueled competition, the Grammy Awards Screening Committee has adopted a guiding principle of "Let 'Em In" for the 2023 Best New Artist category.

Despite releasing six albums, Sabrina Carpenter remains eligible, as does Megan Moroney, who achieved chart success with "Tennessee Orange" in 2023. HARDY and Cody Johnson, previous CMA nominees for New Artist of the Year, are also in the running.

The eligibility criteria hinges on whether an artist has attained "breakthrough or prominence." For Carpenter, the committee deemed this breakthrough to have occurred within the current eligibility period following her modest chart performance in the past.

Other eligible artists include several with nominations at other music awards shows. Chappell Roan, considered a frontrunner, won Best New Artist at the VMAs. Benson Boone, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims make the list after being nominated at the same event.

Moroney, Shaboozey, and Nate Smith are all vying for the same award at the upcoming CMA Awards. And artists such as 4Batz, Bossman Dlow, and RAYE, who have swept other music competitions, are also eligible.

Despite the relaxed rules, artists like Tate McRae are ineligible after appearing on the entry list three times. GloRilla and Anne Wilson, both former Grammy nominees, are also disqualified.

The Recording Academy has faced criticism in the past for both strict and lenient eligibility criteria. However, the current approach emphasizes inclusivity.

With 323 eligible artists, the lowest tally in five years, the Best New Artist race has become more unpredictable. Chappell Roan remains a contender, but Sabrina Carpenter's eligibility has added an element of uncertainty. Voting for the first round opened on October 4, and nominations will be announced on November 8. The final winners will be revealed at the Grammy Awards ceremony on February 2.
