Carpenter will take on the role of Ginger Rogers, Astaire’s Oscar-winning dance partner known for iconic films such as Top Hat (1935) and Swing Time (1936), while Qualley is cast as Adele Astaire, Fred’s older sister and Broadway dance partner.

Billboard also revealed that Paul King, director of Wonka and Paddington, is helming the project, which has been in development since Holland first announced his involvement as Astaire back in 2021. The screenplay, co-written by King and Steven Levenson, is based on Kathleen Riley’s book The Astaires: Fred & Adele, with Riley serving as a story consultant. Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter confirm that the film is produced by Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, Tom Holland, Ben Holden, and Josh Hyams, with executive producers including Harry Holland, Will South, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, and Steven Levenson. Variety notes that Fred Astaire’s daughter, Ava Astaire McKenzie, supports the project, and her son Tyler McKenzie is involved as a consultant and co-producer.

Sabrina Carpenter first gained widespread attention playing Maya Hart on the Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World before shifting focus toward her music career as a Grammy-nominated and two-time award-winning pop artist. She has appeared in over two dozen film and TV projects, including Noobz and Horns. Earlier this year, Carpenter and Qualley collaborated on the music video for Carpenter’s song “House Tour.”
