AceShowbiz - As rumors swirl about a potential third installment in the beloved "Mamma Mia!" movie musical franchise, Amanda Seyfried has shared her thoughts on the casting speculation. During an interview with ABC News, Seyfried addressed the possibility of Sabrina Carpenter playing her character Sophie's daughter in an upcoming sequel.
Despite the fact that Seyfried is only 13 years older than Carpenter, she acknowledged that age is not a significant factor in the franchise, as evidenced by Cher playing Meryl Streep's mother in the previous film with only a three-year age gap. Seyfried expressed her willingness to adapt to the age difference, saying, "Old age makeup for me. That's what it will be. ... I'm a big fan."
Based on the Tony-nominated jukebox musical, the original "Mamma Mia!" (2008) follows Sophie's preparations for her wedding at her mother Donna's (played by Streep) hotel on the Greek island Kalokairi. Donna is unaware that Sophie has invited the three men (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard) who could potentially be her father to the wedding.
The 2018 sequel, "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again", explored flashbacks of a young Donna's (played by Lily James) romantic encounters with the three potential fathers in 1979. In the present, Sophie prepares to reopen her deceased mother's hotel, where her grandmother Ruby (played by Cher) makes a surprise appearance.
Meryl Streep hinted earlier this year that talks for a third movie are imminent, while Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley and producer Gary Goetzman have also expressed enthusiasm for the project. However, Seyfried emphasized that she has not yet seen a script.
If a third "Mamma Mia!" movie does come to fruition, it could follow Lily James' version of Donna during her middle years or explore the events between Donna and Sam after the first film. Regardless of the plot, the potential casting of Amanda Seyfried and Sabrina Carpenter as mother and daughter is sure to excite fans of the beloved franchise.
