AceShowbiz - In a recent episode of Bill Maher's "Club Random" podcast, comedian Nikki Glaser joined Maher for an extended conversation about social media, particularly Instagram. Glaser admitted that she sometimes sees her own Instagram account and thinks, "She's killing it," only to remember that only a small fraction of her life is depicted there.
Maher emphasized the inherent falsehood of Instagram, stating, "That's the whole point of Instagram." Earlier in the conversation, Glaser revealed that she had attended an awards show party primarily to "get the pictures." Maher concurred, saying, "Of course, that's right. You play that game, right?"
Glaser went on to detail the financial investment she made for the event, including $1,500 for a stylist, $800 for hair and makeup, and $200 for a spray tan. She explained, "I'm not making money off of these parties, I gotta get those pictures. That's how you prove to people you're doing stuff."
Maher noted that for a younger generation, the virtual world has become far more significant than the real one. "It's much more important to look like you're having a good time than to actually be having a good time," he said, an idea that Glaser agreed with.
Glaser expressed the occasional feeling of genuine happiness but then regretting not documenting it for Instagram. "I need to tell - that was a waste of a good time because it wasn't documented," she said.
The conversation serves as a timely reminder of the deceptive nature of social media and the pressure it can put on individuals to present a curated and often idealized version of their lives. The pursuit of perfect Instagram pictures, Glaser and Maher argue, can lead to a distorted sense of reality and a prioritization of appearances over authentic experiences.
