AceShowbiz - Devin Strader, known for his dramatic engagement and subsequent breakup with Jenn Tran on the latest season of "The Bachelorette", is now under fire as details about his 2017 arrest surface. Infamous blogger Reality Steve first broke the news, revealing a history of criminal behavior that calls into question the show's vetting process.
According to legal documents obtained by Entertainment Weekly and PEOPLE, Strader was arrested for burglarizing his ex-girlfriend's home in March 2017. The woman found her room ransacked and a diamond necklace, gifted to her by Strader, missing.
She also reported multiple violations of a restraining order she had filed against him, including incidents where he allegedly started a fire with the restraining order and harassed her by showing up at her home and calling her numerous times daily.
The ex-girlfriend further detailed in her Petition for Protection From Abuse that Strader had exhibited violent behavior during their relationship, including spitting on her and putting her in a chokehold. In police reports, she described instances where Strader banged on her door, screamed at her, and laughed at her distress.
Strader later pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and simple criminal damage to property, receiving a sentence of one year of unsupervised probation.
These revelations have sparked outrage among fans and criticism directed at ABC's vetting process. A production source from "The Bachelorette" emphasized that the safety of contestants is taken very seriously and that "every effort to conduct thorough diligence" is made. However, the source acknowledged that the protective order against Strader "did not surface" in their exhaustive searches.
Jenn Tran, who got engaged to Strader during the season finale, has shared her disappointment and distress over the breakup. She mentioned discovering that he was messaging other women on social media, which led to their split.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Tran expressed she was hurt, stating, "Like I said, I can sit here and try to understand why someone would change their mind after saying all those crazy, crazy proclamations of love, but to also then sit here and disrespect the entire relationship by doing things that you know are going to hurt me, and by doing things that are just disrespectful to me, is next level of crazy."
As the controversy continues, it raises significant questions about the responsibilities of reality TV producers in protecting their participants and ensuring a safe environment. For now, The Bachelorette's vetting process is under the microscope, and fans are calling for stricter measures to prevent similar issues in the future.
Devin Strader has yet to publicly address the allegations and his released criminal records.
