AceShowbiz - BBC's "Daddy Issues" has secured a second season after becoming a hit comedy launch on BBC3 in 2022. The series stars BAFTA-winning actress Aimee Lou Wood ("Sex Education") as Gemma, a Stockport-based woman who discovers she's pregnant after a random hook-up.
Forced to turn to her hapless father Malcolm (David Morrissey, "The Walking Dead") for support, Gemma and Malcolm reluctantly share a flat, navigating the challenges of pregnancy and modern life together.
The second season will consist of six episodes, commissioned by Jon Petrie, director of comedy at the BBC, and Fiona Campbell, the BBC's controller of youth audiences. Damon Beesley, founder of Fudge Park Productions, serves as director, while Lynn Roberts ("Man Like Mobeen") is the producer. Executive producers include Phil Gilbert, Lou Wood, Morrissey, Ward and Beesley.
Lou Wood described "Daddy Issues" as "the most fun I've ever had on a job," while Morrissey praised Danielle Ward's "funny and heartwarming" writing. Ward expressed her excitement for continuing the adventures of Gemma and Malcolm.
Morrissey spoke about his character, Malcolm, an inept but well-meaning father who has lost his way. He described Malcolm as "a man-child... [who] blames other people, particularly his ex-wife" for his situation.
The series examines the unique relationship between Gemma and Malcolm, as she assumes the role of a parental figure while also trying to prepare for motherhood. Morrissey emphasized the importance of their dynamic, saying, "He needs to learn from his daughter."
Fremantle is handling global sales for the series, which will air on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer from Thursday, August 15. The entire season will be available to stream.
