AceShowbiz - The excitement is palpable as Marvel Studios begins filming "Fantastic Four: First Steps". Despite attempts to keep details under wraps, leaked set video has given fans a glimpse of the character design, especially the iconic Ben Grimm, aka "The Thing," portrayed by "The Bear" star Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
Historically, the portrayal of The Thing has varied. In the 2005 and 2007 "Fantastic Four" movies, actor Michael Chiklis wore a practical costume. Conversely, the 2015 reboot utilized visual effects to bring Jamie Bell's version of the character to life. However, "Fantastic Four: First Steps" appears to be taking a more blended approach.
The set video reveal a distinctive throwback style in line with the 1960s comics, featuring The Thing's rocky head with a thick brow and rounded exterior. This look suggests that the movie will employ a mix of tangible costumes and prosthetics, avoiding an over-reliance on CGI.
Interestingly, Moss-Bachrach had previously mentioned that he expected a motion-capture performance akin to Mark Ruffalo's Hulk. "Apparently, the suit was really uncomfortable. And it's kind of... We're past that, I think it's a little kind of cosplay, kind of, you know, it's a little amateur, that stuff, now with the technology we have," he had revealed in an interview with Collider.
Yet, new insights cast doubt on whether Moss-Bachrach was fully aware of the practical effects planned. The physical costume might only be used in scenes that require detailed close-ups to avoid the "uncanny valley" effect associated with extensive CGI. This strategy could be a lesson learned from the criticism of the She-Hulk Disney+ series, where the CGI rendition faced significant backlash.
The anticipation surrounding "Fantastic Four: First Steps" extends to the cast, which includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm. Directed by Matt Shakman of "WandaVision" fame, the film promises to revisit the origins of this iconic superhero team with a fresh yet respectful nod to the past.
Set for release on July 25, 2025, the film aims to strike a balance between nostalgia and modernity, appealing to fans old and new. As Marvel continues to reinvent its universe, the creative decisions behind The Thing's portrayal are a compelling example of honoring legacy while embracing innovation.
