AceShowbiz - Robert Downey Jr. stunned fans at San Diego Comic-Con by revealing his return to the MCU as Dr. Doom. This marks the actor's first appearance in the cinematic universe since his departure after "Avengers: Endgame".

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, with input from Disney CEO Bob Iger, played a crucial role in persuading Downey to return. Feige wanted to ensure that Downey's return was not a step backward but a continuation of the MCU's success.

According to Downey, Feige suggested the character of Victor Von Doom, one of Marvel's greatest villains. Downey agreed to take on the role after learning more about Doom's significance in the planned next phase of the Avengers films.

Downey and his wife, Susan Downey, initially approached Feige about contributing to Disney theme parks. However, the conversation shifted towards Downey's potential return to the MCU.

Downey considered several factors before agreeing to the role, including the desire to avoid disappointing expectations. He also sought approval from Bob Iger, who enthusiastically endorsed the idea.

To finalize the deal, Iger arranged a visit to Disney's Imagineering Campus for Downey and Feige. The innovative projects they witnessed there further sealed Downey's decision to join the MCU as Dr. Doom.

Downey will portray Doom in the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars". In the comics, "Secret Wars" features Doom saving characters from different realities and assembling them on Battleworld.

"New mask, same task," Downey said during his Comic-Con appearance. "What can I say, I like playing complicated characters."
