AceShowbiz - Simone Biles' show of sportsmanship to a fellow gymnast at the 2024 Paris Olympics didn't sit well with NFL star Marlon Humphrey. The American gymnast has been blasted by the NFL star for bowing to Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade following Monday's (August 5) floor finals.
"This is literally disgusting," the Baltimore Ravens cornerback posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday. He immediately faced blowback on the platform and fired off a second message, "I'm lowkey getting cooked right now. I think I'm getting cussed out in Brazilian [sic] on Instagram lol."
Many disagreed with Marlon, with one user sarcastically writing, "God forbid athletes show respect to a fellow athlete who has suffered a torn ACL multiple times." Another remarked, "Yeah, because giving someone their flowers who has come back from THREE ACL tears to continue to be a top gymnast is disgusting."
Confused at the criticism, someone else questioned, "Three black women who are the best at what they do showing sportsmanship is what you would define as disgusting?"
Rebeca won gold in the women's floor exercise at the Paris Olympics after beating Team USA's Simone and Jordan Chiles, who took the silver and bronze medal, respectively. Showing their appreciation, Simone and Jordan bowed to the Brazilian gymnast on the podium.
Speaking to the press following the event, Simone explained the reason behind the gesture. "She's so amazing," the most decorated gymnast said. "She's queen. And first it was an all-black podium so that was super exciting for us."
The 27-year-old continued, "But Jordan was like should we bow to her and I was like absolutely. So we're like are we going to do it now and then that's why we did it. She's such an excitement to watch and then all the fans in the crowd, always cheering for her so it just, it was just the right thing to do. She's queen."
"She's an icon, a legend herself," Jordan chimed in. "So I feel like being recognized is what everbody should do when it comes to somebody who's put in the work, put in the dedication. So yeah, in that moment I was like you know what, first off, again, yes it was an all-black podium. Second off, why don't we just give her her flowers. She's given, not only has she given Simone her flowers but a lot of us in the United States our flowers as well. Giving it back is what makes it so beautiful."
