Despite earlier reports, superhero blockbusters remain a force at the box office, with the third 'Deadpool' movie continuing to shatter records and other films experiencing mixed results.
- August 5, 2024
AceShowbiz - "Deadpool & Wolverine" has proven that superhero blockbusters are alive and well, retaining its top spot at the box office in its second week with an impressive $97 million domestic haul, bringing its total to $395.6 million. Internationally, the film earned another $110.5 million, pushing its worldwide box office to $824.1 million. This places it as the second-highest grossing film of the year, behind "Inside Out 2", and the third-highest grossing R-rated film ever, behind "Joker" and "Oppenheimer".
The success of "Deadpool & Wolverine" continues its strong streak at the box office, outperforming the first two "Deadpool" films and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, not accounting for inflation. Its global earnings have already surpassed the total theatrical runs of its predecessors.
Meanwhile, "Twisters" remains in second place, earning $22.7 million in its third week of release for a domestic total of $195.6 million. M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller "Trap" had a modest opening with $15.6 million, while the live-action adaptation of "Harold and the Purple Crayon" debuted with a disappointing $6 million.
"Despicable Me 4" and "Inside Out 2" continue to hold strong in the top five, with the former earning $11.3 million and the latter taking in $6.7 million.
The performance of "Deadpool & Wolverine" and other summer releases has helped boost Hollywood to its best month in over a year, with July becoming the first $1 billion month since July 2023. Despite comparisons to last year, when blockbusters like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" dominated, the industry has seen a resurgence thanks to Disney releases such as "Inside Out 2" and "Deadpool & Wolverine".
