AceShowbiz - Maya Hawke has directly tackled the controversial topic of being a "nepo baby," asserting that her role in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" was undoubtedly due to "nepotistic reasons."
In the movie, Hawke portrayed Flower Child, one of Charles Manson's followers, a role she initially claimed she auditioned for. Reflecting on the backlash, she admitted in an interview with The Times of London, "I never meant to imply that I didn't get the part for nepotistic reasons - I think I totally did."
The casting choices for the film highlight a trend in Hollywood where the offspring of established stars are given significant opportunities. Alongside Hawke, the movie also included Margaret Qualley, daughter of Andie MacDowell, and Rumer Willis, the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. Tarantino's decision to cast these young actors appears to be part of a deliberate move to feature the new generation of Hollywood's elite.
Addressing whether famous offspring deserve such opportunities, Hawke explained, " 'Deserves' is a complicated word. There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don't, but I think I'm comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn't help anyone."
She contemplated her early career choices, acknowledging that one path could have involved changing her name and undergoing physical alterations to avoid the perceptions tied to her lineage.
Hawke's acceptance of her unique position in Hollywood includes a candid admission of the scrutiny she faces, "It's OK to be made fun of when you're in rarefied air. It's a lucky place to be. My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it."
Recently, Maya Hawke has worked alongside both of her parents. She co-starred with her mom Uma Thurman in "The Kill Room" and took a lead role in "Wildcat", a biopic about writer Flannery O'Connor, directed by her dad Ethan Hawke. These collaborations denote a further extension of the family's artistic legacy within the industry.
Hawke's reflections provide a nuanced understanding of the privileges and challenges faced by those born into Hollywood royalty. While acknowledging the inherent advantages, she maintains a pragmatic view about her opportunities and the broader implications of the "nepo baby" phenomenon.
