After canceling royal engagements, the Prince of Wales and his son Prince George are seen attending the Emirates FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United.

AceShowbiz - Prince William is on dad duties. The Prince of Wales and his son Prince George were seen attending the Emirates FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United on Saturday, May 25.

The 41-year-old enjoyed watching the face off at Wembley Stadium in a game ultimately won by Man United, 2-1. In pictures circulating online, the two were seen watching tensely as the match unfolded.

The two princes were also seen greeting players and coaches after the game. After the game, he handed out medals to the players from both teams, as well as the referees and coaches while George watched. Prior to the Saturday game, William was photographed on the field shaking hands and meeting players from Manchester United and their families.

Prince William's new outing came after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced late last week that the country would hold an unexpected general election. In response, Buckingham Palace announced that both King Charles III and William would be canceling events.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Buckingham Palace officials shared that the working royals would continue to cancel or postpone engagements that "may appear to divert attention or distract from the election campaign."

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said that the royal family will postpone engagements that could be seen as a conflict amid the election. "Their Majesties send their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result," the spokesperson explained.

Prior to the cancellation, the royals hosted a garden party held at Buckingham Palace by William on May 21. King Charles ended up pulling himself from events on May 23 and May 24, while William also reportedly canceled another appearance last minute.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the election, which will take place on July 4 on Wednesday. "Earlier today, I spoke with His Majesty the king to ask for the dissolution of Parliament," Sunak explained.
