Greta Gerwig's movie reportedly would be moved out of the running for the Original Screenplay category because the film is based on existing characters, even though it tells a different story.

AceShowbiz - Judd Apatow has been left furious with The Academy's decision to move "Barbie" in the Oscars rate. The filmmaker said it's "insulting" to classify Greta Gerwig's movie as an adapted screenplay instead of the original.

"It's insulting to the writers to say they were working off of existing material," the 56-year-old wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, January 6. "There was no existing material or story. There was a clear box."

On Wednesday, it was reported that "Barbie" would be moved out of the running for the Original Screenplay category. The decision was made from the fact that the film is based on existing characters, even though it tells a different story.

Oscars aside, the movie's leading lady, Margot Robbie, divulged in a new interview that she wants to make a "Barbie" musical. "Trust me, this isn't the first ... this is not the first time we've thought of it, yeah," she said about discussing the possibility of making a "big, crazy musical" with Greta.

"It's so fun when you can turn everything into a big, crazy musical number. Everything is infinitely more fun," Margot additionally told Entertainment Tonight. Greta, meanwhile, shared, "I really love musicals. I mean, nothing would make me happier. So, I would love a musical."

Margot, however, downplayed the prospect of a "Barbie" sequel. "It's funny, that knee-jerk reaction in this day and age for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel. I don't think it was like that 20 years ago. This wasn't designed to be a trilogy," the 30-year-old, who served as a producer on the film for her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, told Variety.

"Everything went into 'Barbie' - and that's how Greta works. She finishes every movie on empty, feeling like she could never make another movie because she put everything she had into that one," she added. "So I don't know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her. Or for us."
