Netflix is represented by 'Maestro' and 'May December' in the movie category, while two of Max's shows, 'The Last of Us' and 'Succession', are making into the TV list.

AceShowbiz - The American Film Institute has shined a light on some of the best works this year. The lists of the top 10 films and top 10 TV shows chosen for the prestigious 2023 AFI Awards are out, with some obvious titles making the cut.

The AFI Awards for films, which fete both Hollywood tentpoles and indie fare, go to "Barbie" and its summer tandem partner "Oppenheimer". They were joined in the list by the likes of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse", "The Holdovers" and "Killers of the Flower Moon".

Netflix is represented by two films, "Maestro" and "May December", in the category. Also among the movie honorees are "American Fiction", "Past Lives" and "Poor Things".

In AFI Awards history since their establishment in 2001, the shortlisted films often match the eventual majority of Oscar Best Picture nominees. Last year, seven top AFI films went on to Oscar Best Picture nominations, along with "All Quiet on the Western Front", "Triangle of Sadness" and "The Banshees of Inisherin", which weren't among the AFI top 10 since the list doesn't include international films.

In cases like these, AFI often honors international productions with Special Recognition, which applied to "Belfast" in 2021 and "Parasite" when it won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2019.

The AFI also unveils the list of its Top 10 Television Programs, including Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" and Apple TV's "The Morning Show". HBO Max's "The Last of Us" and "Succession" are also making into the list alongside "Abbott Elementary", "The Bear", "Beef", "Jury Duty", "Poker Face" and "Reservation Dogs".

"As our nation and our world continue to navigate difficult times, AFI is honored to shine a proper light upon these works of art that lift us up and, ultimately, lead us to empathy," said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, in a statement issued on Thursday, December 7. "That we do so without competition is AFI's hallmark, and we are proud to gather this community of artists together - as one - to celebrate their extraordinary contributions to our time."

The AFI Awards honorees will be celebrated at a private luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills on January 12, 2024.
